I used to believe in saying verbal affirmations, goal setting, and a lot of hocus pocus that self-help authors sell people on to make money.
However, as I have gotten older, and endured a lot of hardship, I have learned something.
You either do what you need to do to accomplish a task, or you don't.
You're either a doer or you are not a doer.
Reading motivational books, posts, and memes will not help you persevere through difficult times.
You either get through them or you don't.
Nowhere is this more applicable in life than fitness.
Nothing is more unpleasant than intentionally starving yourself while putting yourself through painful exercises day after day. Be honest with yourself. Fitness sucks.
There are very few people who actually enjoy working out and dieting.
They do it because they have to.
That is what separates them from the other 98% of the population.
They don't quit just because something is unpleasant. They keep doing the work they need to do because the end result is that important to them .
So, what's the secret of staying motivated?
There isn't one.
Motivation is a lie made up to sell us self-help books and seminars designed to pump us up for 3 days. We get hyped up, full of mania from being stimmed up with positive words, warm feelings, butterflies, and rainbows. Then, we crash and burn.
Once we are dissatisfied with our lives, we buy another book or attend a seminar and repeat the process.
It's a sweet gig for speakers and writers who capitalize on human nature and our tendency to run towards pleasure and away from pain.
However, we lose. We constantly spin our wheels because we are chasing an emotional high that doesn't offer any tangible benefits.
The reality is this.
If you wan't to be successful, stop lying to yourself.
Admit that you're failing in life.
Whatever you want to accomplish in life, take one small step each day to get there.
DO THINGS. TAKE ACTION!
Nobody every became great by talking to themselves in front of a mirror. Snow White is a fairy tale.
Now that you've been dissapointed, because this article didn't give you the emotional boost you were after, get out there and accomplish tasks that actually matter!
